Alumnae Corner

A Reflection from Sarah Thomas

Just before I started writing this, I was greeted with a Facebook memory of the Chorus singing the National Anthem before a UVA football game five years ago. It reminded me of all the great opportunities and memories I received from VWC. It also made me marvel at how much has changed over the past five years.

The last half of this year has been quite a crazy time. While also adjusting to life during a pandemic, I moved to Fairfax, Virginia and started a job as a Multiple Disabilities teacher in Fairfax County Public Schools. I work in a self-contained class with students with autism. Being a new teacher and teaching online definitely has its challenges, but with the start of the school year under my belt, I'm excited for the rest of this year.

Although it was disappointing not being able to sing in my last concert or participate in the graduation ceremony I had expected, I am grateful for everyone who made it possible for us to sing a few songs together, meet up and chat, and say a meaningful goodbye with our virtual spring dinner. I'd like to give a shout out to KaeRenae, Sarah Meng, and Julia Kothman for their work editing and putting together the two virtual songs and Kayleigh for organizing the Spring dinner!

I'd also like to applaud the chorus for taking the current political situation as an opportunity to turn and internally reflect on the chorus. The creation of the Diversity and Inclusion Chair position and fundraiser for Girls for a Change made me proud to be an alumnae of the Chorus!

As trying as these times are, I'm confident the chorus will continue to stay strong. I know the board and KR are working hard to make this year a success, whatever that may look like!

Best of luck to the chorus! I miss you all so much and hope you all have a great year :)

A Reflection from Sarah Atkinson

I’m really glad we got to put together some videos of VWC singing together one last time for the graduation ceremony even though we couldn’t be together! And I’m working in the new COVID Testing Center at the Outer Banks Hospital while I apply to nursing schools for next year.
