Alumna in the Spotlight
Name: Sarah Begeman
Graduation Year: CLAS 2009
What has life been like after graduation?
After 10 years living and working in New York City, Sarah Begeman (CLAS 2009) and her husband Tim relocated back to Northern Virginia in Fall 2020 to be closer to family (and for Tim's new job). She has been working in education since graduating from UVA in 2009, first as a teacher and, after getting her Master's in Public Administration, at the NYC Department of Education, working on policies and practices related to teacher training and effectiveness. Up until the pandemic hit, she was continuing her music hobby with the Brooklyn Community Chorus; she is looking forward to joining up with a DC-area choir as soon as possible! She has also been taking guitar lessons the last few years so has that as a singing outlet.
What are your favorite VWC memories?
VWC was definitely one of Sarah's primary extracurricular activities while a student, and where she formed some of the lasting friendships from her college days. Some of her favorite memories were concerts at the National Cathedral, rehearsals in Old Cabell, singing in the stairs of Alderman before the Candlelight Concerts, "conducting" at Lighting of the Lawn, and, of course, all the tailgates and parties.
Why are you serving on the AFA?
Sarah is currently serving as Secretary of the AFA. She's super excited, now that she's back in Virginia, to join VWC and AFA events in person once we can be together!
