There are numerous social events throughout the semester. In the past, some of our activities have been apple picking, hiking, trampoline jumping, skiing, snow tubing, formal dinners, movie nights, and semi-formals. There are ample opportunities to hang out in the Chorus House and to have parties with our brothers-in-song, the Glee Club.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the audition process and about VWC:

How to schedule an auditionSIGN UP, or use the link on our FB page or email our Vice President, Alex (ras6ex)

What is the audition process?

Not to worry – it’s very easy, brief, and fun! You will be greeted by one of our friendly members of the Managing Board (along with other Chorus members).

The audition consists of a voice quality/range check, singing scales a cappella, singing back pitches, and a few short sight-reading passages. Sight-reading is not a make or break issue. Voice quality, intonation and a good ear are important. You do not need to prepare a piece but you will be asked to sing a portion of a song that is familiar to you.  Each audition takes around ten minutes.

Please arrive five minutes early to complete the front side of your audition form.

What kind of musical experience is required of incoming singers?

New singers are expected to have some choral experience, be able to read music of some complexity or work independently on voice part, be able to learn text in other languages, memorize music for performances, and sing a voice part that currently has openings. If you have had private instrumental lessons within the past several year, you may find singing in the Chorus rewarding.

When do you rehearse?

Rehearsals are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 7:00 PM – 9:15 PM, in Old Cabell Hall, room B012. In addition, singers attend one or two rehearsal weekends each semester. There will be additional dress rehearsals before each concert. Our first rehearsal is Monday, September 4,  7-9:15 PM, in Room B012 in OCH.

What other activities/responsibilities are expected of VWC members?

In addition to singing at all scheduled performances, chorus members also contribute to the smooth functioning of the organization by volunteering with fundraising activities, publicity, stage setup, and participation in gigs.

Our Mission Statement:

The Virginia Women’s Chorus is committed to excellence in the performance of classical, contemporary and diverse music from the challenging choral literature for women’s voices. The Chorus seeks to inspire and enrich others through the choral art form.

The Chorus is more than a fine musical organization ~ it’s a community! There are numerous social activities throughout the semester, and many girls develop friendships that continue long after graduation. Check out some samples from past concerts on our website and our YouTube channel.

Hope to see you soon!
